Denise Ellis of 107 Coxe Street in Hazleton died Wednesday at home following a lengthy illness. She was born in Hazleton the daughter of the late Adam and Anne Marcinkevich and resided in the city throughout her life. Denise was a top ten graduate of Hazleton High School’s class of 1966. Following graduation she attended Bloomsburg University where she earned a bachelor’s degree and later a master’s degree in education. She worked as a teacher in the Hazleton Area School District from 1970 until her retirement in 2002. Denise was well known to sprint car racing fans and competitors throughout the country because of her long association with Mechanicsburg’s Williams Grove Speedway as well as various auto racing publications. Aside to racing, she enjoyed attending concerts and basketball games, watching football on television, and spending winters at her home in Naples, Florida. Preceding her in death in addition to her parents were sisters Virgil Bellringer of Westhampton, New York and Dolores Swift of Chicago. She is survived by her husband of 37 years, Bruce Ellis.
