An online petition seeks to have the United Methodist Church allow local congregations to determine their own stance on homosexuality, but one analyst calls that a terrible idea.
John Lomperis, United Methodist Director at the Institute on Religion and Democracy, says this proposal would basically have the United Methodist Church adopt the same policies that have split the Episcopal Church. Lomperis

"The same policies have been rejected again and again at our denomination's governing general conferences,” he says. “What this proposal would actually do is reward the bullying, any-means-necessary tactics of the sexually liberal protestors who take over denominational meetings. I think it's a terrible idea, for the same reason that I think all the other ways people have dressed up attempts to divorce our church from biblical teaching on sexual self control are terrible ideas."
