John Stewart)John Carl Stewart, 70, Sallisaw,OK., died Tuesday, Nov. 19, 2013 at Sparks Hospital, Ft Smith, AR. of cancer. Memorial services will be held at 1:30 pm Saturday, November 30, 2013 at Brent Community Center south of Sallisaw on Hwy 59 @ Hwy 141. In lieu of flowers, memorials may be sent to First Baptist Church of Ft Smith, AR., Peachtree Hospice Ft Smith, or the charity of your choice. He was born December 12, 1942 in Sedalia, MO., son of John Gordon and Alice Young Bertz Stewart. In 2009 he married his high school sweetheart, Mary Schofield Colston. He attended Maple Woods College, Kansas City, MO. with a degree in Aviation Mechanics. He began his racing career when living in Brookfield, MO. He and his brother were partners in Stewart Bros. Racing. He raced midgets and sprint cars for 45 yrs and traveled extensively over the US. Some of his favorite raceways were Daytona, Odessa, MO., Knoxville, IA., and the Chili Bowl in Tulsa, OK. After retiring as a driver, he founded and operated Southern Midget Racing Series (SMRS) for 15 yrs. Survivors include his wife, Mary of Sallisaw OK, daughter and son-in-law Rhonda and Bodge Witherell, daughter Melinda Burke, grandchildren Roy Dean Witherell, Dustin Witherell, Justin Burke and Brittney Carver all of Versailles, MO., step-son and wife Daniel and Farrah Colston, Lucas TX., step-daughter and husband Susannah and Clint Moyer, Steamboat Springs, CO., step-grandchildren Liam, Ethan, and Ezra Moyer of CO., and Dresden and Dana Colston of TX. He was preceded in death by his parents and brother, Gordon Young Stewart. His remains were cremated. Arrangements were under the direction of Lewis Funeral Chapel, Ft Smith, AR.
